One of the great contributions of renaissance and baroque composers to the history of western music has been the stylistic intricacy of the fugue. Carl Jung listened and re-listened to Die Kunst der Fuge out of a feeling that it could tell him more of the nature of music than perhaps any other composition (Laurens van der Post, Jung and the Story of Our Time).
This program celebrates the compositional style that permeated life for centuries and still engages composers of our own day. In collaboration with the musicians of Piffaro, we will embark on a journey from Obrecht to Bach, showcasing baroque winds alongside the renaissance instruments from which they descended. Kleine Kammermusik will join Piffaro’s wind band of recorders, shawms, dulcians, sackbuts, and straight trumpets to recreate a multitude of polyphonic textures, emotional affects and sonic textures that will delight, entertain and awe just as it did in its own day.
